RADIATION AND RADIOACTIVE DECAY

Radiation - non-ionizing radiation, ionizing radiation and its types. Electromagnetic spectrum – sources. Radioactive Decay - spontaneous fission, isomeric transition, alpha decay, beta decay, positron decay, and electron capture decay.

INTERACTION OF RADIATION WITH MATTER

Interaction of charged particles with matter - Specific ionization, Linear energy transfer range, Bremsstrahlung, Annihilation, Interaction of X and Gamma radiation with matter- Photoelectric effect, Compton Scattering, Pair production, Attenuation of Gamma Radiation, Interaction of neutron with matter and their clinical significance.

Common Radioisotopes – Units of Radioactivity - Radioactive Decay Law and Activity - Cyclotron - Produced Radionuclides, Radionuclide Generators - Technetium generator. Reactor-Produced Radionuclides – fission.

Principles of Gas-Filled Detectors - Geiger–Müller Counters. Principles of Scintillation Detectors, Semiconductor Detectors and Liquid Scintillation Counters.

Units of Dosimetric Quantities. Radiation Weighting Factor, Equivalent Dose and Sievert. Tissue Weighting Factor and Effective Dose. Fundamental Radiation Protection Principles, Biological Effects of Radiation.
